27 June 2013: First impressions - Cam City - Sex And The City

It's the second part of our blog-like first impressions series. I bought Cam City's solo "Sex And The City", because I like Killa Keise (R.I.P.), and Cam is a member of his group Killa Squad. I was not impressed by their album "The 5th Element", but Da Robba's (another member) mixtape was pretty ok. Anyhow, Cam City's music seems like one of these mainstream, skinny jeans endeavors directed to a "wider audience". Numerous hooks (sometimes even verses) filled with autotune, girls moaning in the background, delicate hooks etc. Yes, almost the whole album is about women, sex, flirting, partying etc. And at the same time it's nowhere around Too Short's music. Cam City is way softer, his bars don't hold any heat, don't feature any interesting punch lines (at least they are not audible), basically everything seems highly forgettable. "Sex And The City" has a very mainstream approach, seems dedicated mostly to women... with this said I barely finished listening to this cd, possibly enjoyed at most 5 tracks; out of 20! I think the production is pretty fine, but it didn't really matter to me when I couldn't stand the sweet, corny vocals and choruses. If you want to hear about sex addictions, back rubbing, kissing, fucking, putting fingers in various orifices, all in soft, laidback style, it may be a recording for you. I know it's definitely not for me, waste of time and money. Two thumbs down. If anyone wants to buy it or trade for it, let me know! There is a DVD included, I decided not to watch it.

26 June 2013: First impressions - Sav Sicc & Bleezo - Twin Evil

Today we're gonna start an experiment and launch new type of articles called "First impressions". As you already know we write full-length reviews from time to time, but unfortunately due to time constraints we cannot write them as frequently as we once used to. That's why you don't see reviews so often nowadays.
To mitigate that we came up with an idea to write short posts about cds we've recently acquired and listened to. First impressions will be less formal, will be highly biased, way shorter (no tracklist, introduction etc.); just a small write-up to share our views with you when we don't have time for longer pieces. Let's start off with "Twin Evil" by Sav Sicc and Bleezo.

I wasn't expecting much from this Sacramento release, because both artists were rookies and I learned to be skeptical towards debuts. Yet this one proved me wrong. Sav Sicc and Bleezo are extremely talented, they spit bars in an unusually fast way (kind of like T-Nutty did back in the days), come up with original multi-syllabic rhymes, heat all the way through. What is more, they have some real hard, sinister production; loud beats, dark sounds, mob type shit (Phonk Beta did a couple of cuts). Themes are not superb, mostly about repping Sac-Town, a couple of threats and braggings. Notable exceptions include songs about dead homies, women and drinking. If you are looking for serious West Coast street stuff (no modern disco music), with fast flows and great rhymes, go and grab "Twin Evil" - 17 hard joints with nothing but heat. This one gets two thumbs up from me.
