25 July 2013: First impressions - Tut - The Heart

I took Tut's cd off my shelf, looked at both covers, at the tracklist and guest appearances. And then it struck me - why did I buy this cd? Well, I must have had a reason, I don't buy stuff just like that. Anyhow, I checked BayUndaground.com's artist data base and news archive... nothing. Then I googled for "Tut" trying to figure out who he is, where he's from, where I might have heard him before. Even today I don't know why I purchased his solo. But I don't regret it, it turned out to be pretty good.

Pineal Gland Entertainment, Big Big Productions, unfortunately these names don't tell me anything, but on one of the tracks Tut says he's from Oakland, so I at least know that much. He's got a young voice and comes up with really nice, refreshing rhymes. What is more, he leans more towards laidback tracks, he's definitely not on that modern, Livewire-like tip. Slower paces and frequent instruments (piano, guitar) in the background make for a good music setting. He does not focus solely on the streets, he also talks about women and his feelings, which is always appreciated. All in all I've got to say that I enjoyed the cd. 12 calm songs with hardly any guest appearances, maybe they are a bit monotonous in the long run, but I can't say for now, because I'm fresh after the first listen. What I can say though is that this one will definitely get more spins from me.

04 July 2013: First impressions - G-Stack - My Purple Chronicles

I enjoy Delinquents' endeavors. I think that their strength is in the way both G-Stack and V-White compliment each other, and how they both sound on one record. With this said, I was a bit skeptical towards G-Stack's full solo album, I thought he could bore me with his "not too emotional" flow. Well, I was fortunately wrong. Even though G-Stack does not put much emotions into his verses he did a well job to keep listener's attention. I noticed that after two or so spins I'm able to repeat certain hooks, memorize a melody a bit. That's always a sign of a good album. On this debut solo cd he also made sure to talk about various subjects, something for the streets (repping Oakland), something for the ladies, reminiscing fallen friends and taking a critical look at a contemporary society. Only a handful of guest appearances didn't turn this album into yet another compilation, it lets G-Stack shine and showcase interesting rhymes and thought out punch lines. A couple of tracks have a modern lively feel to them, so even though there are only 11 titles, there's a little bit of everything, thanks to which "My Purple Chronicles" will have your attention from beginning to the end. Two thumbs up!
