14 August 2013: First impressions - Mac Mall, Sleepdank, Dubee & Tic - Thizzpire Strikesback

Mac Mall, Sleepdank, Dubee and Tic - doesn't that that sound like a highly anticipated collaboration? A guaranteed hit? It did to me. It's a shame that those artists haven't yet collaborated, even though they are on the scene for some time now. Anyway, truth is the whole thing utterly disappoints. Frankly speaking, it is half-baked, released in a rush, which is clearly depicted by the patchy cover and an overall graphic design. They even say in the credits that they're sorry for rushing it, but blah blah blah. Oh well, you don't even know who did the production, but it unfortunately doesn't sound good - and that's my main point of concern. Music is rather generic, like free samples taken off various soundclick type of websites. Paces tend to be dynamic, vibes pretty simple, kept in the modern fashion. It's just... the beats leave a lot to be desired, they are boring, non-engaging, lacking. Verses themselves are ok. Bear in mind that I mean the likes of Dubee and Mac Mall, so "ok" means in this case "these guys can do waaaay better". They generally touch on generic themes, five-tre-five this, Crestside that, my cuddy, pimp that beezy, you know the drill. Yet again, verses seem rushed too, they don't offer anything interesting. Unfortunately the whole thing is a letdown, a thumb down, only a handful of actually nice songs, but it's only a fraction.

09 August 2013: First impressions - The Chicken Hill Project

The very first impression is great. The album is pressed in a nice digipak with stunning graphics. Truly, the artwork is second to none, you should holla at Phil Emerson if you seek such quality. Then again Hallway Productions did their part equally well and prepared a set of splendid West Coast beats. Mild tempos, with dark or street-like sounds in the background make you feel the echo of the 90's gangsta rap. On top of that you will receive great, melodious and catchy hooks, on many occasions performed by a singer Billboard Bear. Thanks to his skills I can hear some of those choruses in my head even now.

However, yes I regret to say that, I'm not fully satisfied with verses prepared by the artists themselves. Foremost I think there's too much Turf Talk on this one. Don't get me wrong, I like Turfy, but I just don't feel like his voice matches the production. He's sometimes too funny for the dark and serious beat, plus he's present on 7 cuts, so his presence has a strong impact on the entire thing. Secondly (I know I'm gon' get a lot of hate for it) some people cannot rap with the beat. You know, rhymes matching the drum hit, keeping your verse melodious, flowing with the rhythm... Doey Rock's performances are usually like that, and - sadly - so are Brotha Lynch's. Both of them left left 5 verses, so yet again their presence IS audible. Brotha Lynch recorded a nice verse on "Ridin' & Smokin'" and "Trippin If You Want To", but all remaining ones are just plain bad when it comes to following the rhythm properly, it seems like he placed rhymes in random locations in his verses, there's just no way I can bob my head to his lyrics. Fortunately there are many good verses: Ren Da Heatmonsta, C-Bo, WC, Too Short, Mistah F.A.B., Andre Nickatina... all of them gave a solid input. It's just... a single verse can ruin the whole song, and it's hard for me to ignore for example non-melodious appearances by Brotha Lynch or Doey Rock. With this said it seems like a mediocre project to me.
